The first show was themed Broadway, the second Moulin Rouge and this year the theme is Carnival.  On hearing the brief for the carnival dance show it proved to be a challenge, “the cover shouldn’t have any references to feathers or masks, needs to integrate colour, Lady Gaga, ballet and latin”.  With this eclectic brief we worked up what a cover that the client simply loves, integrating a font for the show title that we feel is reminiscent of the TV show Tales of the Unexpected – the whole programme look and feel ticks all the boxes for both the client and WN6 Creative Design a like.

Started from a bedroom in Wigan 4+ years ago with little more than 30+ pages the magazine has now grown to be 3 publications of over 50 pages each.  This stratospheric success (in part down to the winning combination of WN6 Creative Design super low cost production and the Local Life Management team) is not without challenges – now Local Life have to leave the confines of the home office and head off to bright shiny new offices!  Its all about relocation relocation – and onward and upward!

In time I understood what was missing, it’s the tangible asset factor.  What was missing from cyber tech was the need we have to hold something that is tactile, being connected through the medium.  Newspapers, Magazines, and media of the printed form may have been impacted but they are still there, and in some cases more and stronger than ever.  Take a walk through any supermarket and look at the shear range of magazines and publications that adorn the shelves – there’s countless magazines on countless topics.  Simple truth is there’s nothing quite beats a good book, magazine or news paper, portable, no need for electricity, batteries, no real worries about loosing them and they are tactile and interactive in the simplest of ways.  I reckon Johannes Gutenberg would still be very proud of his legacy.

What technology really has brought us, is the ability to produce magazines a lot quicker and easier than before for instance WN6 Creative Design do the pre-press production for Wigan based Local Life, and turn the whole magazine round in a very short space of time in terms of work hours.  This means the economies of scale and the point of access to produce a professional looking magazines are far far lower than they ever where.

So what are you interested in, do you have a club, a hobby, a community that would like to read and enjoy the news and views in a tangible form, can you become a micro publisher?  If you would like to try your hand at magazine publishing, you could always give it a go on your own.  Start with a something small and ‘lo-fi’, use packages such as Word and Publisher, or even the open source applications out there.  Sell a little advertising and have a go – it could be the start of something big, who knows at very least you may become self employed.

Rainhill Garrick Society a local amateur dramatic society based in the town of Rainhill, Merseyside.  Where looking for an advertisement to promote their latest play – 84 Charing Cross Road.

I little research and a description by good old Wikipedia – “a 1970′s book by Helene Hanff, later made into a stage play, television play and film, about the twenty-year correspondence between her and Frank Doel, chief buyer of Marks & Co, antiquarian booksellers located at the eponymous address in London, England.”

Mark at Urban Wonder based in Wigan is one of those people.

Mark creates urban sculptures and mosaic based installations throughout the Wigan and the North West of England.  One of his most recent projects that shows his ability to harness and embrace the passion and creativity of youth is a Memorial for a former pupil of St Catherine’s CE Primary School in Wigan.

Mark was commissioned to work alongside children from years 3,4,5 and 6 in the production of a mosaic memorial. Without a doubt the overarching theme of seasons, plants and animals creates the perfect memorial indeed.

Having recently visited Marks website www.urbanwonder.co.uk I stumbled upon a marvel of ‘upcycling’ – that I personally find stunning – a  Mosaic Blue Tit sculpture.  A superb piece that would grace any garden.

So why do I describe it as upcycled?  Well, Mark has used waste polystyrene off cut’s found in a builder’s skip, sculpted the form of a bird, covered the polystyrene foam in an external cement based screed, then applied an array of tiles to create a truely wonderful stylised light weight garden sculpture.

I’d certainly buy one Mark!
