As part of my role as freelance designer and magazine creative for Local Life magazine I create many hundreds of advertisements throughout the year. Sometimes an advertisement brief pops up that simply says “something arty”.
Rainhill Garrick Society a local amateur dramatic society based in the town of Rainhill, Merseyside. Where looking for an advertisement to promote their latest play – 84 Charing Cross Road.
I little research and a description by good old Wikipedia – “a 1970′s book by Helene Hanff, later made into a stage play, television play and film, about the twenty-year correspondence between her and Frank Doel, chief buyer of Marks & Co, antiquarian booksellers located at the eponymous address in London, England.”
With this in mind and with a little look at the film poster I set to work. 1 hour later I came up with this. There are few advertisements that tell such a story but if you look closely if feel it embodies much of the plot, whilst advertising the local production too.
